‘Wings of the City’ exhibit lands in downtown Fort Worth

Nine guardian angels have come to rest in Fort Worth and will be here until the end of August. The large sculptures, titled Wings of the City, are by Mexican artist Jorge Marín.

They have been traveling throughout the world for the past 25 years, appearing in more than 200 exhibits. Most recently they have been touring Texas, making stops in Houston and Dallas. They are here at the invitation of the city of Fort Worth and are sponsored by the Mexican Consulate in Dallas.

Marín’s large bronze sculptures, most of them with wings, combine portrayals of bodily perfection with themes of desire, pathos and determination.

The sculpture in Sundance Square Plaza is simply a pair of Marín’s intricately cast wings, elevated on a plinth so that visitors can stand in front of the them and become a participant in the exhibit. This interactive aspect of the presentation has been quite popular in other cities, and long lines form in anticipation of having an angelic moment.

The exhibition is part of “Spotlight on Mexico, 2015,” a series of cultural, educational and economic initiatives that promote a partnership between Fort Worth and Mexico. “There is a food event coming up, a music series and a film series,” said Jenny Conn of Fort Worth Public Art, who is the project manager for Wings of the City.

Marín is scheduled to attend the opening ceremony in Sundance Square Plaza from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Afterward, there will be a walking tour of the exhibition, which is installed in public areas and parks in downtown Fort Worth.

The sculptures are in Sundance Square, General Worth Square, in front of the Fort Worth Convention Center, Burnett Park and the Fort Worth Water Gardens.
