Water Department Begins Construction Downtown

March 6,2012

On Monday, March 5, The Fort Worth Water Department began replacing five blocks of water mains downtown as part of its ongoing effort to improve the water distribution system. New 12-inch water lines will replace existing 8-inch lines, some of which may date back to the early 1900s.

The project encompasses replacing the water mains in Third Street between Throckmorton and Commerce streets and in Main and Houston Streets between Fourth and Third streets. Also, additional valves will be installed to minimize the areas impacted should a main break occur in the future.

Construction is expected to last until the end of June, with no construction occurring from April 14 to April 22 to accommodate MAIN ST. Fort Worth Arts Festival. The project will impact traffic flow with lane closures, but there will be no full road closures. Construction hours will be from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m. Monday through Friday with the possibility of work performed on some Saturdays in the event of weather delays, however Saturday construction would cease by 3 p.m. Additionally, construction hours will be limited to 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.for work done in Houston Street, which has been identified as a heavily-used thoroughfare during rush hours.

The Water Department has coordinated this project with Downtown Fort Worth Inc., Sundance Square and other stakeholders. To keep everyone informed of the construction schedule and route, The Water Department will keep an updated web site here.
