When we think of DFW streetwear, Fort Worth may not be the city that comes to mind. Union Station owner, clothing designer and musician, Patrick McGrew Jr, (a.k.a. “Junya”), is looking to change that and put Fort Worth’s culture on the map.
“I really wanted to hone in and put focus on the streetwear culture and the art culture in Fort Worth,” McGrew said. “That was really my goal.”
After years of creation and selling his merch at pop-up shops around the area, he made a valuable connection with one of Fort Worth’s most prominent families.
“I got connected with the Bass family and they gave me an opportunity to find my home so this is my home now.”
The Bass family, the owners developers of the city’s iconic Sundance Square, had offered McGrew a storefront space from which he could sell his art, in all its various forms.
“I wanted people to walk in and get a sense and a feel of me,” the multi-hyphenate artist and businessman said. I’m an artist, I paint, I fashion design, I’m into music. So when you walk into Union Station, you see all of these things.”
Junya has even designed his own sneaker collection, which are all available at Union Station. His journey to creating his own shoe didn’t happen overnight.
“I used to customize shoes actually,” McGrew said. “I’ve always been into shoes but I knew I wanted to make my own. I got with the team, designed the shoe, found some manufacturers for it and made it happen.”
So far, the best way to spot a Trvp Art sneaker is by looking for the robot arm.
“The logo is the robot arm that comes from our original logo which is the robot,” he said.
His Trvp Art brand also produces T-shirts, hoodies, hats, accessories, and several more garments.
“I also specialize in custom one-of-one pieces,” Junya said. “I get a lot of clients who come in and they want pieces that represent them that no one else has in the world.”
Regarding the Fort Worth streetwear culture he, his store and his brand has helped cultivate, Junya said he’s proud of the progress they’ve made.
“The community has accepted us with open arms. They love what we’re doing. We’re getting a lot of new customers and new eyes getting behind the brand as well. I feel like we’re moving in the direction as far as pushing the culture of Fort Worth. Last week made two years of being here and we’re still pushing.”
