Trinity River Vision Board Officially Adopts Panther Island
May 8,2014
The board of directors unanimously voted to change the district’s name to Panther Island
FORT WORTH, TX –The board of directors for the Trinity River Vision Authority (TRVA) approved the renaming of the Trinity Uptown district to Panther Island. The name change was prompted by a community-wide urge to brand this new district with an identity that was uniquely Fort Worth.
There are over 20 cities in the United States with an uptown district. Perhaps one of the most familiar is Uptown Dallas but you can also visit Uptown New York City, New Orleans, Houston, Seattle, Tampa and Chicago among others. “I support the name change,” said TRVA board member Bob Riley. “I think Panther Island is a unique destination and uptown is more of a generic term,” he said.
“I have asked for input from the community and the name Panther Island really resonates with them,” said Trinity River Vision Authority Executive Director, JD Granger. “The community has really grasped the idea of Panther Island as a true district and location,” he said.
This is also reflected in a Star-Telegram poll where 63% of readers said they preferred the name Panther Island, 22% preferred the name Trinity Uptown and 15% chose neither.
In addition, bypass channel architects, Hargreaves Associates and Randall Stout Architects along with several real estate developers recommended that the district be named Panther Island because it denotes that the district is a waterfront development. The 12-miles of waterfront that will be found on Panther Island is a major attribute of the area and the name should reflect this important feature.
