Tower 55 Update

March 3,2014

Work has commenced to relieve congestion at one of the nation’s busiest at grade railroad crossings. Tower 55 is located at the junction of the UP and BNSF lines roughly at the intersection of I-30 and I-35 in Downtown Fort Worth. In addition to adding track, sidings and upgrades to bridges and other railroad infrastructure, the $103 million project will close four crossings in Downtown, two on both 1st and Peach Streets.
These closures will allow trains to pass through Downtown without sounding their horns and allow them to travel through the Tower 55 intersection without having to stage as far away as Saginaw. Pedestrian mitigation is being discussed with 3rd and Gounah Streets as the primary alternate access points. Consideration is being given to a permanent closure at 9th, east of the railroad yard. This crossing has been closed for three years.
