An art gallery in downtown Fort Worth has a special exhibit designed to let Black artists celebrate the Black experience on their own terms.

The Sunday’s Best exhibit features 18 artists and includes over 30 pieces of artwork in a variety of mediums, including photography, collages, fiber art and more. The exhibit is at the Zona 7 art gallery, 404 Houston St.

The exhibit was originally slated for Feb. 1 to March 9 to celebrate Black History Month but was extended to March 16 because of its popularity.

The curators of the exhibit are Dahlia Horne, Dontrius Williams, and Kelsha Reese. They are gallery attendants at Sundance Square who work in the galleries by providing maintenance, welcoming guests, gathering visitor information, answering questions about artwork, and sometimes curating their own exhibits.

Reese says the group wanted the title of the exhibit to resonate within Black culture, so people would immediately understand the concept behind it. Sunday’s Best represents Black people showing up as their best selves based on what they think represents their best selves, not what other people think, Reese said.

“I feel like whenever Black people are controlling the narrative, it’s always worth going to go see,” Reese said. “A lot of our narratives are stories told by people who don’t look like us. So whenever our narratives are coming from us firsthand, I always think that’s worth exploring or worth going to see.”

The work represented in Sunday’s Best is celebratory of African American life and will give guests the chance to appreciate the contributions of African American people in American culture, Reese said.

An artist talk featuring some of Sunday’s Best artists will take place Saturday, March 1, at 3 p.m. at Zona 7 gallery.

Sunday’s Best is in close proximity to two other galleries.

One is the 400h Gallery at 400 Houston St., which currently has the 12th Annual Lenora Rolla Juried Show, presented by the Tarrant County Black Historical & Genealogical Society, along with Sundance Square. A celebration of Black History Month, the show features work from local student and adult artists.

Caravan of Dreams Gallery at 501 Houston St. currently has an exhibition by artist Karinne Smith called west follies. Smith had a year-long residency in Fort Worth, where she produced a large body of work across various media, including photography, print, painting, installation and sculpture.

Sunday’s Best and the Lenora Rolla Juried Show run through March 16, and west follies runs through the end of April.

All galleries are free and open from Tuesday to Sunday from 12 to 8 p.m.
