Sundance Square, the owner of the 35-block downtown Fort Worth entertainment, office and retail district, received a top Pinnacle Award from the International Downtown Association on Thursday in recognition of its new plaza.

“Sundance Square’s project received IDA’s most prestigious award for demonstrating excellence in downtown management,” said David Downey, IDA’s president and chief executive officer.

“Each year, the IDA awards jury honors the very best programs and projects in each category to recognize great work and most importantly to set the standard for best practice in our industry. The Sundance Square Plaza is a wonderful example for all cities to emulate.”

The 1-acre plaza, which opened in November, received one of two Pinnacle Awards. The other went to the Wichita Downtown Development Corp. for a $500,000 downtown master plan. Seven merit awards were also given.

The awards were presented during the professional organization’s 60th annual trade show in Ottawa, Ontario.

“The addition of the plaza created a centerpiece in downtown Fort Worth that has quickly become a destination for North Texas residents and visitors from all around the world,” Johnny Campbell, president and CEO of Sundance Square, said in a statement.

On Saturday, the plaza hosted ESPN’s College GameDay broadcast.

The 500-member International Downtown Association, based in Washington, D.C., describes itself as a guiding force in creating healthy and dynamic centers that anchor the well-being of towns, cities and regions.

Sundance Square is a privately held mixed-use project that has served as a catalyst for the revitalization of the central business district for more than 30 years. Sundance Square is a member of the International Downtown Association.

The plaza features two new Class A office buildings, restaurants and shops, a multipurpose stage, four 32-foot-tall umbrellas, a 2,000-square-foot pavilion and several water features
