Road Construction: An Update
March 6,2012
Orange barrels are a common sight in Fort Worth as contractors work to complete road and bridge improvements. Using unspent bond funds, the city’s goal is to eliminate the backlog of arterial and neighborhood street projects by March 2013.
Six new arterial street projects are under design, 11 arterial street and bridge projects have been bid for construction and 17 neighborhood street contracts have been bid for construction during the past two months.
The Transportation and Public Works Department has projected spending levels, in six-month intervals, through March 2013 in response to the City Council’s call for an accelerated program to complete more street projects in Fort Worth.
In many cases, bid prices are coming in lower than anticipated: for example, arterial projects that were expected to cost $11.5 million came in at $8 million, and neighborhood street contracts that were estimated to cost $18.7 million came in at $15.1 million.
