FORT WORTH – The 30th year of the Main Street Arts Festival in downtown Fort Worth is off to a wild start, with performers and bands keeping art-seeking attendees entertained.
Glass sculptor Kit Karbler of Denver says wild is fine, so long as we're not talking about the weather.
"It does get scary, because it says things like possible large hail," he said of the weather report.
He laughs when he says it, but he's serious. And thunderstorms are possible all weekend long.
"And when you make things like this," Karbler said, pointing to his glass work, "they have to be protected."
Festival spokeswoman Claire Armstrong said last year was the first time in festival history they canceled an entire day because of weather. She hopes that doesn't happen this year, but they also have the option to close temporarily if weather turns severe.
"They're locked down with ten-pound weights on each side of the tents, so they're pretty sturdy," Armstrong said. "But if winds go over 40 miles per hour, obviously, they can blow down easily."
Armstrong added artists can seek shelter in Sundance Square-area businesses.
"Our priority is safety of our guests, and our attendees, and of our artists," she said.
She points out unless the weather is severe, rain doesn't really keep people away. They expect hundreds of thousands of attendees to view the work of 215 artists over the four-day festival.
"If it hails, I'll get under one of these tents," joked John Shindoll of Dallas.
But for now, he'll enjoy the sunshine and spirit of downtown Fort Worth.
