LegacyTexas Bank Awards $16,500 to STEAM Programs at Fort Worth Library
March 28,2018
The Fort Worth Public Library Foundation received a grant award of $16,500 from LegacyTexas Bank to support STEAM Programs at the Fort Worth Library on March 28 in the Sid W. Richardson Discovery Theatre at the Central Library. The grant will support expanding access to 3D printers, robotics and other equipment across Fort Worth through the Mobile Cat concept.
“LegacyTexas Bank is pleased to provide the Fort Worth Library with funding for these Mobile Cats that will help increase the 21st century skills of our community’s K-12 students by giving them greater access to hands-on, science-based discovery tools,” said Eric Loller, Vice President and Community Reinvestment Officer for LegacyTexas Bank.
The Mobile Cats concept plays on the Northwest Library’s Panther Makerspace feline theme. Each Mobile Cat houses a 3D printer and uses state-of-the-art software which produces high-quality 3D objects. With this technology, an educator can teach concepts and skills related to design, manufacturing, engineering, art, and science. Funding for these mobile makerspaces also supports expansion of STEAM-related programs including robotics, electronics, engineering concepts, computer programming, aeronautics, AV production, and computer-aided design.
“STEAM programs provide an interactive opportunity for students to experience science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics in unique ways. We love seeing students, educators and families gathering in the library to explore the skills needed in today’s workforce and build a foundation of for tomorrow’s leaders,” said Manya Shorr, Fort Worth Library Director.
The Fort Worth Public Library Foundation serves to enhance educational programming in the community and in the libraries and is grateful for the commitment from LegacyTexas Bank to support learning and literacy in Fort Worth. Library Foundation President and CEO Leslie Oliver exclaimed, “The ‘original collaborative workspace’ is a wondrous place for children and young adults to participate in interactive programs that support the learning objectives mandated by the state in the schools.”
