Groundbreaking for the long-awaited Hemphill-Lamar Connector has been postponed, with the Wednesday March 18 ceremony moved to Wednesday April 8 due to forecast rain on the original date.
The project promises the city a traffic tunnel and road connecting Lamar Street downtown and Hemphill Street on the Near Southside.
Residents are invited to the 10 a.m. groundbreaking ceremony where Hemphill intersects with 650 W. Vickery Blvd. Set to speak are Mayor Betsy Price; District 9 City Council member Ann Zadeh; Paul Paine, president, Fort Worth South Inc.; and Johnny Campbell, president-CEO, Downtown Fort Worth Inc.
Proposed as part of Interstate 30 relocation in 2002, the underpass is intended to improve connectivity between the Near Southside and downtown and provide what officials call a more viable pedestrian and bicycle connection than the historic underpasses at Jennings, South Main and Henderson streets.
