Area families can enjoy trains on Mother’s Day weekend without ever leaving the station, so to speak, as communities nationwide participate in National Train Day on Saturday.
Texas Rail Advocates will host a free event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Fort Worth Intermodal Transportation Center, 1001 Jones St.
Highlights include walk-through tours and viewing of Trinity Railway Express and Amtrak trains, up-close examination of a new BNSF freight locomotive, guided tours of a restored 101-year-old interurban trolley, a Chuggington Kids Depot based on the popular children’s animated TV series, operating model railroads, a drawing for free Amtrak train travel, entertainment and food for purchase.
“Trains Matter” is the theme of this year’s National Train Day, said Peter LeCody, president of Texas Rail Advocates. “Trains are an integral part of the American story,” he said in a statement. “National Train Day is a way to celebrate this positive impact by inviting current and future passengers to tour equipment, ask train and railroad industry experts questions and enjoy family-friendly activities.”
