Fort Worth Independent School District Renovates Downtown Building For Young Women's Leadership Academy
July 10,2013
The FWISD has begun its $5.8M renovation of the four story building at 401 East 8th Street into the Young Women's Leadership Academy. The grade 6-9 all-girls school outgrew its space on Magnolia Avenue. Ultimately the school will house grades 6-12. Enrollment is expected to expand to about 250 students this year and 375 students in 2013-14, and reach an eventual capacity of 525.
The central Downtown location makes the school accessible to a larger group of students, compared to other locations that were considered (including one in far west Fort Worth.) As one of the FWISD's Gold Seal Schools of Choice and Gold Seal Programs of Choice, enrollment is open to all female students in the district. The FWISD and the YWLA hope and intend to partner with Downtown stakeholders and add value and participate in the Downtown community.
Renovation on the new campus is expected to be complete in the fall of 2013. The addition of the YWLA to Downtown is an objective in Plan 2023, a 10 year Strategic Action Plan for Downtown Fort Worth, that helps to continue to establish Downtown as a place for learning and for all ages.
