FitWorth Kicks off Second Annual FitWorth Challenge for Fort Worth Companies
January 27,2015
On February 2nd, FitWorth will launch the second annual FitWorth Challenge to provide Fort Worth companies and families with the opportunity to make healthier choices in simple ways, every day. The challenge is a 6-week health tracking competition, with teams of 2 -10 individuals logging their nutrition, minutes of physical activity and weight loss through FitWorth’s online platform – FitWorth Track.
Last year, 2,000 individuals participated in the inaugural FitWorth Challenge, and collectively lost more than 7,000 pounds. This led Fort Worth to the honor of being named Wellness Capitol in a contest against Des Moines, Iowa. UNT Health Science Center took the top prize as the organization with the highest level of average activity minutes, championing health by acting as a role model for the rest of the community.
As of 2013, 28.8 percent of Tarrant County adults were overweight or obese. By partnering with existing leadership within communities, such as counselors, teachers, and parents, FitWorth ensures grassroots engagement to have a lasting impact. The FitWorth Challenge directly engages the caregivers and future workplaces of the children this organization was tasked to serve, with motivational incentives, community support and educational tools for participants to take home to their families.
In addition to the activity and nutrition components, this year’s challenge added a civic engagement component, including additional opportunities for teams to earn points, by supporting existing community wellness resources. FitWorth is designed to function as a hub for these resources and the challenge presents an interactive and tangible way to take part in building a culture of wellness in Fort Worth.
Teams can earn points for running in or volunteering at the Cowtown Marathon, attending a healthy cooking class from Tarrant Area Food Bank, participating in the FitWorth Restaurant Crawl, and more. The challenge is open to corporate and community teams, so that individuals can participate through their workplace or with a team of friends. Prizes will be awarded to the highest-performing company and team, as well as the organization with the highest level of participation, to provide an accessible and inclusive kick-starter for healthy choices in 2015.
