Downtown Fort Worth Initiatives, Inc. and the City of Fort Worth Release a Request For Proposals for Heritage Park Plaza
April 15,2014
Respondents to submit preliminary conceptual designs and budgets by June 13, 2014
FORT WORTH, April 15, 2014 – Downtown Fort Worth Initiatives, Inc. (DFWII), in partnership with the City of Fort Worth have released a Request for Proposals (RFP) for Heritage Park Plaza. Qualified landscape architects and other related consultant services are invited to submit preliminary conceptual designs by Friday, June 13, 2014 for the restoration improvements necessary to reopen the Plaza.
Proposals must include two (2) conceptual designs that address structural and mechanical issues in the Plaza and Plaza Entry. Respondents should also include preliminary budgets and project approach leading to final design.
Heritage Plaza is part of the Fort Worth park system and was designed as the City of Fort Worth’s contribution to the bicentennial of the Unites States by renowned landscape architect Lawrence Halprin. Halprin was hired by Streams and Valleys, Inc. to study the Trinity River and Downtown areas. In the mid-1970s he began the Plaza design. The Plaza is located on the top of the bluff overlooking the Trinity River at North Main Street and serves as the gateway from Downtown Fort Worth to Heritage Park, the Trinity Trails and Trinity Uptown. Due to safety concerns, the Plaza was closed in April of 2007 and has remained closed.
Today, at 34 years of age, the Plaza has curable landscape, electrical and mechanical issues related to fountains, lighting and electrical systems. Minor structural deterioration must also be addressed. Reopening the Plaza is part of Plan 2023, the Downtown Strategic Action Plan approved by City Council in 2003. Funding for this project is expected to come from public and private sources.
“In 2009, Heritage Plaza was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Returning this beautiful Plaza to the public in working order is a part of our vision to make Downtown enjoyable, unique and a source of civic pride for all Fort Worth citizens and guests,” said DFWI Chairman, Johnny Campbell.
