Christmas tree goes up in Sundance Square

Tree In Sundance Square

FORT WORTH — Sundance Square Plaza has a new tree — just in time for the holidays.

A 58-foot blue spruce from Michigan arrived downtown Monday and will be decked out in time for Saturday’s lighting ceremony of the city’s Christmas centerpiece.

“I’ve had a few folks send me notes and say, ‘Why are you standing the tree up so early?’ I say because a 58-foot blue spruce takes about a week just to decorate,” said Johnny Campbell, president and chief executive officer of Sundance Square. “And the ornaments will be sparkling as usual, and large, with plenty of things to look at.”

The tree — officials say it’s their tallest one yet — will be decorated with nearly 6,000 LED lights and powered with renewable energy when it is turned on at about 6 p.m. Saturday.

The tree has long been a big part of Fort Worth’s holiday tradition, but having Sundance Square Plaza, which opened in 2013, as a venue has increased attendance, Campbell said.

“What we saw different last year was, with this great venue to put the tree in, people came out and were surrounding the tree and really used it as a marker to kick off the holiday season,” he said.
