A Gift to Businesses and Bicyclists Alike: Bike Rack Donations by Request
December 19,2011
As part of the Department of Energy, Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant, the City of Fort Worth purchased a number of racks for installation in the downtown area. The City proposes to use a number of unplaced bicycle racks to start a bicycle rack request program. The City will donate racks to businesses within the City limits on a first-come, first-served basis until the supply is depleted, or June 2012, whichever comes first. There are approximately 125 racks available for this program.
Benefits to City & Business
Providing bicycle racks encourages cycling for commuting, shopping, short trips and errands rather than automobile trips that can contribute to congestion and pollution. Businesses could expand their client base by providing convenient and safe bike parking for their patrons and employees. Additionally, the availability of bike parking discourages cyclists from locking their bikes to parking meters, trees, pedestrian handrails, street signs and other structures. This program will enhance the current implementation of the Bike! Fort Worth plan and provide an opportunity to business owners to become more bicycle friendly.
