* The histories of Fort Worth’s First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and Pioneers Rest Cemetery are interwoven. The historic church was founded in 1855 in the home of Dr. and Mrs. Carroll Peak (Florence), which was an abandoned army building from the original fort. Dr. and Mrs. Peak are buried in Pioneers Rest Cemetery.
Between 1869 and 1873, the Reverend Joseph A. Clark, and sons Addison and Randolph Clark founded an early male and female seminary in downtown Fort Worth. Addison had a son born in 1869, whom he named AddRan for himself and his brother. Little AddRan died in 1872 and is buried in Pioneers Rest Cemetery. In 1873, the Clarks founded Add-Ran College in Thorp Spring, Texas which later became Texas Christian University.
The First Christian Church, now located at 612 Throckmorton Street, is the oldest continuously operating church established in Fort Worth.
Our special thanks to Taylor Rentals for providing the tent and chairs.
Hardbound copies of the book written about the cemetery will be for sale by the Fort Worth Genealogical Society for $5 each.
